If you’re applying for a Georgia vehicle title but can’t provide standard proof of ownership — a lost title, a title you never received, missing signatures, or a title with a defect — the Georgia Department of Revenue requires a Motor Vehicle Certificate of Title Bond before it will issue you a title. The bond amount is set at twice the vehicle’s average retail value, with a $5,000 minimum, so it varies by vehicle rather than being a fixed amount.

Understanding exactly which documents Georgia requires alongside the bond — and what Instant Issue does and doesn’t speed up — can help you avoid delays at your County Tag Office.

At American Surety Bonds Agency, qualified applicants can obtain this bond online through our Instant Issue platform. Instant Issue makes it fast and easy to get your bond itself — it does not mean Georgia issues or approves your title instantly. You’ll still need to complete a notarized affidavit and a law enforcement inspection, and submit your full application to your County Tag Office, before your bonded title is issued.

What Is a Georgia Certificate of Title Bond?

The Georgia Certificate of Title Bond is a surety bond required by the Georgia Department of Revenue when a vehicle owner cannot provide the standard proof of ownership needed to obtain a title — for example, a lost or never-received title, a title with missing signatures, or a vehicle purchased without a properly transferred title.

This bond protects prior owners, lienholders, subsequent purchasers, and other parties with a security interest in the vehicle from financial loss if someone else later comes forward with a valid competing claim to the vehicle. The bond remains in force for 4 years from its issue date.

If a valid ownership or lien claim is made against the vehicle during that 4-year period and the Department of Revenue is notified of a breach, an eligible claim may be made against the bond. Once the term passes without a claim, the bonded title can generally be treated as a standard, unrestricted title.

Who Needs the Georgia Certificate of Title Bond?

You may need this bond if you:

  • Purchased a vehicle but never received a title from the seller
  • Lost your Georgia title and can’t get a duplicate through normal means
  • Have a title with missing signatures or other defects
  • Inherited a vehicle without a clear title
  • Are applying for a Georgia title on a vehicle with a ‘full legend’ (branded or reconstructed) title history requiring a bond

You must also be a Georgia legal resident, and the vehicle must not be a model year 1985 or older, and must not be abandoned.

Why Is the Georgia Certificate of Title Bond Required?

This bond helps protect anyone with a legitimate ownership or lien interest in the vehicle that a standard title application can’t otherwise verify.

  • Protect prior owners and lienholders from losses if a competing ownership claim surfaces later
  • Protect subsequent purchasers who rely on the bonded title
  • Give the Department of Revenue a way to issue a title when standard proof of ownership isn’t available, without leaving other parties unprotected

How Much Does the Georgia Certificate of Title Bond Cost?

The required bond amount is set at twice the vehicle’s average retail value, with a $5,000 minimum — you do not pay that full amount upfront. The premium is the price you pay to obtain the bond, and it’s a fraction of the bond amount.

This is a one-time premium — Georgia Certificate of Title Bonds do not renew — and through our Instant Issue platform it starts as low as $100, plus shipping and processing fees. Your exact premium depends on your bond amount, which is twice your vehicle’s average retail value as established by the Georgia Department of Revenue, with a $5,000 minimum.

Required Documents & the Bonded Title Process

Getting your Georgia bonded title involves more than just the bond itself. Along with your bond (Form MV-46), the Department of Revenue requires:

  • Form MV-1 — the standard Title/Tag Application
  • Form MV-46A — a notarized affidavit supporting your bond application. Your name must match exactly across all your documents, and this form must be signed in front of a notary.
  • Form T-22B — a Certification of Inspection completed by Georgia law enforcement, confirming your vehicle’s identity

A vehicle history report (such as an NMVTIS report) and any ownership paperwork you do have round out a complete application.

Two additional forms apply only in specific situations:

  • Form T-128 — only needed if your inspection finds a missing or altered serial/VIN plate
  • Form T-4 — only needed if your title history shows an existing lien that needs to be released

Once you have your bond and all required documents, you’ll submit your complete application to your County Tag Office, along with the $18 title fee (separate from your bond premium). You must apply within 6 months of your bond’s issue date.

For the complete list of Georgia’s bonded title requirements, see the Georgia Department of Revenue’s Bonded Vehicle Title page.

How to Get Your Georgia Certificate of Title Bond

Your bond is available through our secure Instant Issue platform. Getting your bond is the fast part — the steps that follow it happen at the county level and take additional time.

  1. Determine your bond amount — twice the vehicle’s average retail value as established by the Georgia Department of Revenue, with a $5,000 minimum.
  2. Complete the Georgia Certificate of Title Bond Instant Issue application with your bond amount and vehicle details.
  3. Pay securely. Pay for your bond by credit card.
  4. Download your bond. Instantly download your Form MV-46 bond.
  5. Complete Form MV-46A in front of a notary, and schedule your Form T-22B inspection with Georgia law enforcement.
  6. Submit your bond, MV-46A, T-22B, and MV-1 application (plus any additional required forms and the $18 title fee) to your County Tag Office within 6 months of your bond’s issue date.

Steps 1–4 happen instantly online through American Surety Bonds Agency. Steps 5–6 are separate government requirements that Instant Issue does not speed up — they involve a notary, a law enforcement inspection, and your County Tag Office’s own processing time.
