Choose Your Bond Application

Surety bonds for bad credit are still possible. Bad or limited credit can make it harder to get bonded, but a decline is not always the final answer. If your Instant Issue application was declined, or you are worried your credit will be a problem, American Surety Bonds Agency can review your application through our standard underwriting process.

Understanding how credit affects your bond can help you avoid delays and plan ahead for your premium.

Once you’re ready, our team makes it easy to complete a secure bond application and get the help you need.

Also Known As

Bonds for applicants with credit challenges go by several names. You may also see them called:

  • Bad credit surety bonds
  • Credit challenged bonds
  • High-risk surety bonds
  • Non-standard surety bonds

These names do not describe a different type of bond. They describe the same license, contract, court or commercial bond your state, court or obligee requires, written through underwriting for an applicant whose credit needs a closer review.

What Is a Bad Credit Surety Bond?

A bad credit surety bond is the same bond a state, court or obligee requires, issued to an applicant with credit challenges. Nothing about the bond itself changes: it still guarantees the obligation it was written for, whether that is following licensing laws, finishing a contract or carrying out a court-appointed duty. It is not insurance for you or your business, so if the surety pays a valid claim, you agree to repay it.

Who Needs a Bad Credit Surety Bond?

A bad credit surety bond may apply to you if:

  • Your Instant Issue application was declined
  • Your credit score is low, or you have past credit problems such as collections or late payments
  • Tax liens, judgments or a past bankruptcy appear on your record
  • You have little or no credit history

Credit is not the only reason an application goes through standard underwriting. Higher bond amounts, certain bond types and some bond obligations go through standard underwriting even for applicants with excellent credit. Whatever your situation, getting your bond in place on time keeps your license, project or court case moving.

Why Does Credit Matter for a Surety Bond?

Credit matters because a surety bond is a financial guarantee. The surety promises to pay valid claims if you don’t meet your obligations, and you agree to repay the surety for any claim it pays. As a result, the surety looks closely at your credit, because it:

  • Shows the way you’ve managed your financial obligations in the past
  • Helps the surety judge how you are likely to handle the obligations your bond guarantees
  • Helps set your premium

A lower score does not rule you out. It simply means the surety looks more closely at the rest of your application.

How Much Does a Surety Bond Cost with Bad Credit?

With credit challenges, your premium may be higher than the premium for an applicant with strong credit.

Your premium may depend on:

  • Personal credit history
  • Experience in your business, industry or fiduciary role
  • Net worth

At American Surety Bonds Agency, we work with a wide array of markets, from preferred clients to non-traditional clients and everyone in between, to help find the right rate for your bond.

Declined for an Instant Issue Bond?

Many of our Instant Issue applications include an online credit review. If your application is declined, you may see a message that it was declined based on information in your credit report and that you should contact your agent. We are your agent, and we can help. For applicants with challenged credit, we usually find a carrier that can write the bond.

Each application is different, so we cannot promise approval. However, applicants with credit challenges should know that:

  • The carrier may ask for more information, such as business or personal financial statements.
  • Some bonds may require collateral.
  • Adding a co-signer (indemnitor) with stronger credit may help your application.
  • A decline on an Instant Issue application does not mean you cannot get bonded.

The sooner we receive any documents the underwriter asks for, the sooner your bond can be issued.

Bad Credit Surety Bonds by Bond Type

Credit is reviewed for most bond types, but what the underwriter looks at depends on the bond you need.

License & Permit Bonds
License and permit bonds are required by a state or local agency before you can get or renew a license or permit. Many are available through Instant Issue, and if your Instant Issue application is declined, our team can review it through standard underwriting.

Contract Bonds
Bid, performance and payment bonds are underwritten more closely than most license and permit bonds, because they guarantee that a construction project will be completed and paid for. If you are a small contractor with limited credit history or working capital, the SBA Surety Bond Guarantee Program may help you qualify. See how the SBA Surety Bond Guarantee Program works.

Qualifying bids and contracts under $250,000 can use our Fast Track application. Contracts of any size or scope can use our Contractor Bond Kit.

Court Bonds
Court bonds, such as appeal, probate and guardianship bonds, are required during legal proceedings. They are not available through Instant Issue, so each application goes through underwriting. Along with your credit, the underwriter looks at the bond amount, your assets and, for fiduciary bonds, your experience in the role.

Commercial Bonds
Commercial bonds, such as ERISA, dishonesty/business services, lost instrument and utility deposit bonds, guarantee that you follow a law, regulation or fiduciary duty. Most are underwritten one at a time, and the surety may review your business and personal credit along with your financial strength.

How to Get Your Bond with Bad Credit

Obtaining your bond through American Surety Bonds Agency is simple.

  1. Choose your bond type and complete that bond’s application, or call us at (404) 486-2355 and tell us which bond you need.
  2. Our underwriting team will review your application and contact you if any additional information is needed. Once we have your documents, underwriting review usually takes 1 to 3 business days, and many reviews finish toward the shorter end of that range.
  3. Review your approval and pay to finalize your bond.
  4. Receive your completed bond to submit to the agency, court or other party that requires it.

With your bond in place, you’ll be ready to meet your bond requirement.

Tips to Improve Your Chances

A few simple steps can help your application move through underwriting faster:

  • Tell us about any credit issues up front so we can place your application with the right carrier.
  • Have your bond details ready: bond type, bond amount and the agency, court or other party (obligee) that requires it.
  • Have your personal or business information ready, including your legal name and address.
  • Answer all application questions completely. Here is why bond applications ask for personal information.
  • Apply early, well before your deadline, so there is time for underwriting review.
  • If your bond renews, renew it on time, and if your credit improves, ask us to review your premium at renewal. See how surety bond renewal works.

The more complete your application, the easier it is for us to find the right carrier for your bond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a surety bond with bad credit? Often, yes. Many applicants with bad or limited credit can still get bonded through standard underwriting, although the premium may be higher.
My Instant Issue application was declined. What should I do? Call us at (404) 486-2355 or choose your bond type above and complete that bond’s application. Our underwriting team will review it and look for a carrier that can write your bond.
I already sent you a standard bond application. What happens next? Our underwriting team reviews your credit as part of that application. If the carrier needs more support for your file, such as financial statements, collateral or a co-signer, we will contact you.
Can a co-signer help me get bonded? It can. A co-signer (indemnitor) with stronger credit can strengthen your application. Our underwriting team can tell you whether a co-signer is an option for your bond.
How much does a surety bond cost with bad credit? Your premium depends on factors like your credit history, experience and net worth. With credit challenges, it is often higher than the premium for applicants with strong credit.
Can I get a surety bond with bad credit instantly online? Not always. Some Instant Issue applications are declined after a credit review. If yours is declined, our underwriting team can review your application.
Can I get a bid or performance bond with bad credit? These bonds are underwritten more closely than license and permit bonds. Small contractors with limited credit history may qualify through the SBA Surety Bond Guarantee Program.
How long does underwriting review take? After we receive your documents, most underwriting reviews take 1 to 3 business days, and many take less than the full 3 days.
